Clinical Application
This Burford-style rib spreader is intended to provide controlled separation of the ribs and chest wall during open thoracic procedures. It facilitates exposure for posterolateral and anterolateral thoracotomy approaches, lung resections, pleural procedures and selected mediastinal access. The two available size configurations support different operative needs: the 47x62x200 mm set for narrower intercostal exposure and the 65x62x200 mm set for wider separation in larger patients or when greater working room is required.
Design & Configuration
The instrument features two opposing retraction blades whose relative position can be adjusted to establish and maintain the desired intercostal opening. A controlled, adjustable span lets the surgeon achieve gradual distraction to optimize visualization while limiting excessive force on ribs and soft tissues. The blade geometry and span options influence reach, leverage, and distribution of retraction force—key factors when selecting size for patient anatomy and the planned operative field.
