Clinical Application
This Burford-pattern rib spreader is used to provide stable, hands-free retraction of ribs during open thoracic procedures. It facilitates controlled widening of the intercostal space for procedures such as thoracotomy, pulmonary resections, pleural procedures and other intrathoracic exposures where maintained, adjustable separation of the ribs is required. Inclusion of two pairs of blades allows selection of blade size and orientation to match incision length and rib geometry, improving tissue engagement and protection.
Design & Configuration
The instrument features the classic Burford configuration with an adjustable expansion mechanism that permits incremental opening and secure retention of the chosen span. Two pairs of blades are supplied to accommodate different rib thicknesses and surgical approaches; positioning the blade pairs anteriorly and posteriorly distributes load across the rib surface to reduce focal pressure. The overall geometry and blade depth are intended to optimize exposure while minimizing soft-tissue impingement and facilitating suction, instrumentation, and visualization within the thoracic cavity.
