Clinical Application
Macintosh size #3 is the primary adult blade used for direct laryngoscopy and oro‑tracheal intubation in operating rooms, emergency departments, intensive care units and procedural suites. The curved Mac geometry is designed to lift the epiglottis indirectly and expose the glottic opening for passage of an endotracheal tube. The flexible tip option provides additional control of the blade tip to improve visualization in patients with challenging anatomy, limited mouth opening or reduced neck mobility, reducing the need for excessive force or repeated attempts.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curved profile positions the blade in the vallecula to transmit lifting force to the epiglottis for indirect visualization of the vocal cords. The articulating/flexible tip allows incremental angulation at the distal end to fine‑tune the line of sight without changing gross blade position. This capability can assist with anterior airways or when gentle manipulation is preferred to minimize soft tissue trauma. The conventional mounting is compatible with standard handle attachment methods used for reusable laryngoscope systems.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Reusable laryngoscope blade
- Pattern / model: Macintosh (Mac) #3
- Configuration: Flexible‑tip, curved conventional blade; sold as set/1
- Tip / jaw pattern: Curved Macintosh profile with articulating tip
- Typical surgical use: Adult orotracheal intubation and airway management
