Clinical Application
The Weitlaner self-retaining retractor is designed to provide stable wound exposure and consistent retraction of superficial soft tissue and skin edges. Its sharp pronged tips deliver a secure bite into tissue, making it appropriate where firm, hands-free retraction is required for procedures such as minor general surgery, plastic and reconstructive cases, hand and extremity procedures, ENT exposures, and various outpatient or ambulatory interventions. The instrument is best used on tissues where a penetrating grip is acceptable to maintain retraction without continuous manual assistance.
Design & Configuration
The 3 x 4 prong configuration provides an asymmetric distribution of teeth that helps center and stabilize wound edges while minimizing instrument rotation. The self-retaining ratchet mechanism holds the blades apart at the desired width, freeing the surgical team’s hands for other tasks. Sharp prongs penetrate tissues for a firm hold—advantageous when retraction tension is required—but should be used with care in delicate or highly friable tissue to avoid unnecessary trauma. The 23 cm overall length offers reach suitable for small-to-medium deep cavities while remaining maneuverable in confined operative fields.
