Clinical Application
A three-prong sharp Volkmann retractor is used to atraumatically anchor and retract soft tissue and skin edges to improve visualization and access in confined operative fields. The sharp prongs provide focal purchase for holding skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, or muscle during procedures such as wound exploration, small soft-tissue dissections, orthopedic exposure, hand surgery, and many general or ENT operations where controlled traction is required. The instrument is intended where a secure grip on tissue is preferred over blunt retraction; typical use includes placement in strategic points around an incision to maintain exposure while other instruments are used.
Design & Configuration
The three radially arranged sharp prongs deliver concentrated anchoring force with minimal instrument bulk, allowing multiple points of retraction without excessive crowding of the wound perimeter. A 21.5 cm overall length provides sufficient reach into deeper wounds or cavities while preserving handle ergonomics for the assistant or surgeon. The slim profile of the shaft helps maintain line-of-sight to the field and reduces interference with adjacent instruments. The sharp prong configuration is selected when a firm, non-slipping hold is needed; careful placement and controlled traction minimize tissue trauma.
