Clinical Application
Used to calibrate and dilate the urethra and to aid placement of urinary catheters or guidewires in genitourinary procedures. The instrument provides tactile feedback during passage and is commonly used for assessment and gentle dilation of urethral strictures, for catheter facilitation in difficult catheterizations, and in outpatient urology and surgical suites where reusable sounding instruments are required.
Design & Configuration
The gently curved shaft follows the anatomical course of the urethra, allowing controlled advancement with minimal mucosal trauma. A smooth, rounded tapered tip reduces the risk of mucosal abrasion during insertion. The shaft stiffness provides tactile feedback so the operator can detect resistance from strictures or false passages; this helps the clinician decide whether to proceed, dilate, or use alternative techniques. The 12 FG caliber is selected when a small-caliber channel is required or to confirm lumen patency before upsizing to larger catheters or dilators.
