Clinical Application
Designed for thoracic and chest-wall procedures that require controlled separation or approximation of ribs. Common uses include open thoracotomy and posterolateral approaches, exposure for lung or mediastinal access, reduction and alignment of rib fractures, and maintaining intercostal spacing while placing fixation plates or intrathoracic drains. The instrument provides stable, hands-free retraction when locked, and controlled approximation when closing the chest.
Design & Configuration
The Sellors configuration features opposing blades that engage the rib segments with broad, atraumatic contact surfaces to distribute pressure and minimize focal trauma to periosteum and soft tissue. A locking/ratchet mechanism allows incremental spreading for fine control of intercostal width and secure maintenance of position, while reversal of the mechanism enables precise approximation for closure. The 19 cm shaft length balances reach within the thoracic inlet and operative field with compact handling for use in confined spaces.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Rib approximator and spreader (Sellors)
- Configuration: Opposing blades with locking/ratchet handle for controlled spread and approximation
- Size: 19 cm overall length
- Primary use: Thoracotomy exposure, chest-wall retraction, rib reduction/approximation
- Reusable design suitable for repeated reprocessing
Material & Construction
Manufactured from corrosion-resistant surgical stainless steel with precision-machined joints for reliable operation and long service life. The blade faces are shaped to provide broad contact with ribs to reduce localized pressure. Designed for repeated reprocessing and compatible with standard hospital sterilization methods.
Quality & Compliance
Manufactured by FDA-registered OEM facilities and produced under strict quality control standards.
Brand Comparison
Comparable in form and function to equivalent instruments offered by major US medical suppliers.
