Clinical Application

Designed to provide controlled percutaneous access to the pleural space, this thoracic trocar is used to establish a conduit for pleural drainage and small-bore catheter placement. The 16 Fg size is commonly selected for management of pleural effusions, pneumothorax decompression at bedside or in the emergency setting, and for facilitating placement of pigtail drains or small-bore chest tubes where minimal tissue disruption is desired.

Design & Configuration

The instrument is configured as a trocar-cannula assembly: a rigid cannula remains in situ while a fitting obturator provides a cutting or penetrating profile for initial entry. This arrangement allows controlled pleural entry with immediate establishment of a protected lumen for drainage or catheter passage. Tapered shaft geometry and a secure handle improve insertion control and help minimize soft-tissue trauma and inadvertent intrathoracic injury during placement.

Material & Construction
