Clinical Application
Designed to create a controlled tract through the chest wall for placement of a large-bore drainage catheter, this instrument is used during tube thoracostomy for management of pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion and other indications requiring rapid pleural drainage. The 35 Fg diameter is considered a large-bore option often selected when evacuation of blood, thick fluid or rapid drainage is required. The trocar technique permits direct percutaneous entry with the obturator in place, followed by removal of the obturator to leave the cannula as an introducer for the chest tube.
Design & Configuration
The instrument is configured as a trocar and cannula assembly: a rigid obturator housed within a matching cannula. The obturator provides a penetrating tip for controlled entry, while the cannula remains in position as the conduit for chest tube insertion once the obturator is withdrawn. This configuration minimizes tissue drag during insertion and enables rapid conversion from access to drainage. The larger internal bore of a 35 Fg cannula supports higher flow rates and accommodates thicker effluent or passage of instruments when required.
