Clinical Application
Designed for controlled dilation of the tracheal stoma and surrounding soft tissues, this Laborde-style dilator is used to enlarge or maintain the opening during open and percutaneous tracheostomy procedures and when exchanging tracheostomy tubes. The instrument provides a stable, atraumatic means to create a working channel for tube insertion, cannula placement, or inspection of the stoma while minimizing mucosal injury.
Design & Configuration
The single-shaft, hand-held geometry offers direct tactile feedback and precise manual control during dilation. The 14 cm length provides sufficient reach from the external stoma to the proximal tracheal lumen in standard adult anatomy, allowing clinicians to position the dilating tips beyond superficial tissues without excessive shaft length. Blunt, rounded dilating tips distribute force across a larger surface to reduce focal pressure and help protect mucosa and cartilaginous structures during staged dilation.
