Clinical Application
This Tuffier-style rib spreader is designed to provide controlled lateral retraction of the ribs and intercostal tissues during open thoracic procedures. It is used to expose the pleural cavity for thoracotomy, lung resections, chest-wall debridement, rib fixation and other procedures requiring stable, sustained separation of the rib cage. The serrated blade interface improves purchase on the rib margins to reduce slippage during retraction and instrument adjustments.
Design & Configuration
The instrument employs serrated blades to engage rib edges securely and minimize soft-tissue creep during retraction. The Tuffier pattern provides a compact, efficient footprint for access within the intercostal space while allowing controlled spread and locking of the blades to maintain exposure. Blade sizing (53 x 43 x 130 mm) offers a balance of bite and depth appropriate for a range of adult thoracic applications where a precise, stable retraction is required.
