Clinical Application
This instrument provides controlled, self-retaining chest wall retraction for open thoracic procedures. It is used to spread the ribs and maintain exposure during thoracotomy, pulmonary resection, mediastinal access, chest wall reconstruction and trauma exploration. The included set of three blade pairs allows the surgeon to select blade geometry and width that best match the intercostal space and rib profile, improving tissue engagement and minimizing localized pressure on bone and soft tissue.
Design & Configuration
The Finochietto-style spreader uses an adjustable screw and locking mechanism to achieve gradual, stable separation of the ribs. Interchangeable blade pairs permit customization of blade width and tip shape to optimize contact with the ribs and reduce slippage. The 25 cm overall length balances reach and handling for standard adult thoracic exposures while the lighter aluminum construction reduces surgeon fatigue during positioning and prolonged retraction.
