Clinical Application
This Finochietto-style rib spreader is designed for open thoracic procedures where stable, self-retaining separation of the ribs is required to expose the pleural cavity, lungs, mediastinum, or cardiac structures. It is intended for use in elective and emergent thoracotomy, chest wall reconstruction, and in cases where conversion from minimally invasive approaches to open access is necessary. The serrated blade edges provide enhanced purchase on the rib surface to minimize slippage during retraction.
Design & Configuration
The instrument uses the classic Finochietto rack-and-pinion self-retaining mechanism to allow controlled, incremental opening and reliable maintenance of the retraction span without continuous manual force. Serrated blade faces improve grip on cortical bone and help resist rotation under load. The aluminum construction reduces overall instrument weight, which can improve handling and decrease fatigue during prolonged exposures.
