Clinical Application
A Finochietto-pattern rib spreader is used to provide stable, hands-free separation of the ribs and sustained exposure of the thoracic cavity during open thoracotomy, lung resections, mediastinal procedures, and management of rib fractures or thoracic trauma. The 45 x 65 mm blade footprint is intended to engage and cradle individual ribs to distribute retraction forces and maintain an unobstructed operative field for visualization and instrument access.
Design & Configuration
The instrument uses the classic Finochietto self-retaining ratchet mechanism to allow controlled, incremental expansion and secure maintenance of the desired intercostal separation. The 200 mm length provides reach into the operative field while keeping the handles accessible for adjustments. Aluminum construction reduces instrument weight, which can improve handling and reduce surgeon fatigue during prolonged retraction. Blade geometry that cradles ribs helps distribute pressure and minimize focal stress on bony and soft tissue structures.
