Clinical Application
Designed to provide controlled separation of adjacent ribs during open thoracic procedures, this Cooley-pattern rib spreader facilitates access to the pleural cavity, lungs, heart and great vessels. The relatively compact blade footprint is suitable for limited exposures and smaller intercostal spaces encountered in select adult and pediatric cases, helping surgeons achieve direct visualization and instrument access for pulmonary resections, thoracotomies and other chest wall procedures.
Design & Configuration
The spreader features bladed retractor arms sized 37 x 49 mm to deliver a measured contact area on the rib surface, which helps distribute retraction forces and reduce focal pressure on periosteum and soft tissue. The 200 mm overall length provides sufficient reach for standard thoracic exposures while remaining low-profile to minimize interference with the operative field. Blade geometry and alignment are intended to seat securely against the ribs for stable, symmetric separation during retraction.
