Clinical Application
This instrument is designed to provide controlled lateral separation of the ribs for exposure of the pleural and mediastinal cavities during thoracotomy and related thoracic procedures. Surgeons and OR teams use this style of rib spreader to maintain an open surgical field for pulmonary resections, chest wall procedures, decortication, drainage of empyema, and other interventions that require stable retraction of the rib cage.
Design & Configuration
The Cooley pattern features an asymmetric blade configuration (35 x 50 mm) that allows the surgeon to select a narrower or wider contact face depending on the size of the incision and the depth of exposure required. A 200 mm overall length provides a balance between reach and control in standard thoracotomy approaches. The reduced weight of an aluminum body improves handling and decreases fatigue for the assistant or surgeon during prolonged procedures, while the blade geometry distributes retraction force to minimize focal pressure on the ribs.
Instrument Specifications
- Pattern/model: Cooley rib spreader
- Blade dimensions: 35 x 50 mm
- Overall length: 200 mm
- Material: Aluminum construction
- Reusable: Yes
- Typical use: Thoracotomy and thoracic exposure
Material & Construction
Constructed primarily from aluminum to provide a lightweight instrument that is easier to position and hold during procedures. The aluminum construction reduces hand fatigue for the operator while providing sufficient rigidity for reliable rib separation. Designed for repeated use and cleaning between cases.
Quality & Compliance
Manufactured by FDA-registered OEM facilities and produced under strict quality control standards.
Brand Comparison
Comparable in form and function to equivalent instruments offered by major US medical suppliers.
