Clinical Application
This instrument is engineered to provide controlled, symmetric retraction of the ribs and intercostal tissues to create and maintain an operative corridor in the thoracic cavity. It is used in open thoracotomy and other chest-wall procedures where stable separation of the ribs is required for access to the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and portions of the heart. The two blade size options (30 mm and 50 mm) support tailored contact surface area to match patient anatomy and incision size, helping distribute retraction forces and reduce focal pressure on the ribs.
Design & Configuration
The Cooley pattern features opposing blades that engage the rib margins and a mechanism to adjust and sustain the chosen degree of spread. Blade sizing (30 x 50 mm) gives surgeons options for narrower or wider contact surfaces depending on the surgical exposure needed and the patient’s chest wall. The 185 mm overall length provides a balance of reach and rigidity for typical thoracotomy approaches while keeping the instrument compact for handling and positioning. Lightweight aluminum construction reduces user fatigue during prolonged cases without compromising functional stiffness for retraction.
