Clinical Application
This pediatric Burford rib spreader provides controlled lateral retraction of adjacent ribs and intercostal tissues for exposure of the pleural cavity, lungs, mediastinum and other intrathoracic targets during pediatric thoracotomy, VATS port insertion, and limited thoracic procedures. The shorter 13 cm working length and two blade-width options allow the surgeon to select an appropriate footprint for small chest cavities while minimizing excess distraction force on immature ribs.
Design & Configuration
The instrument is supplied as an aluminum frame with two interchangeable pairs of blades. The supplied blade sets (30x42x130 mm and 41x42x130 mm) provide different contact widths and depths to match patient anatomy and the required exposure. Interchangeable blades permit rapid intraoperative adjustment without changing the entire retractor, and the lightweight aluminum construction reduces operator fatigue during prolonged positioning. The geometry and blade selection enable even distribution of retraction force across the rib margins to reduce focal pressure on fragile pediatric bone and soft tissue.
