Clinical Application
This retractor is intended to maintain consistent exposure of the lumbar vertebral column during spinal procedures where stable soft-tissue and bony access is required. It is used to retract paraspinal musculature and soft tissues to expose vertebral lamina, facet joints, intervertebral discs and fusion sites during decompression, discectomy, fusion procedures and other lumbar spine approaches. The self-retaining design frees an assistant’s hands for instrumentation or suction and provides a stable working corridor for implants and microsurgical techniques.
Design & Configuration
The Caspar pattern employs two opposed blades with a ratcheting lock that secures a preset separation. This geometry provides symmetric retraction and stable exposure while minimizing incremental adjustment during the procedure. The 50 mm nominal size delivers a moderate footprint appropriate for typical lumbar exposures, balancing soft-tissue retraction with visibility in standard posterior and lateral approaches. A low-profile locking mechanism and blade orientation are designed to optimize access to the vertebral elements while minimizing interference with instrumentation and imaging.
