Clinical Application
This modified Alan Parks retractor is intended for anorectal and perianal surgery where wide circumferential exposure of the anal canal and distal rectum is required. It is used to provide and maintain soft-tissue retraction during procedures such as hemorrhoidectomy, fissure/fistula repair, sphincteroplasty, transanal excision of low rectal lesions and other proctologic interventions. The omission of a central post ("without centre") preserves an unobstructed working corridor for instrumentation, suturing and stapling devices.
Design & Configuration
The design preserves the Alan Parks approach to circumferential retraction while removing the central support element. Clinically, this configuration reduces a physical obstruction in the midline and allows direct instrument access to the surgical field. The lateral blades deliver continuous soft-tissue retraction around the anal verge and distal rectum, facilitating visualization of the mucosa and submucosa. The open-centre layout is helpful when a surgeon requires unimpeded access for stapling, direct suturing, or when an alternative central stabilizing method is used.
