Clinical Application
This instrument is used to develop and maintain the plane between the intima/plaque and the medial layer of an artery during open endarterectomy procedures. It enables controlled blunt dissection and atraumatic stripping of atherosclerotic plaque following an arteriotomy, facilitating removal of the plaque sleeve with reduced risk of intimal flap fragmentation. Common applications include carotid, femoral–popliteal and other peripheral vascular endarterectomies where precise tactile control is required alongside clamps and endarterectomy forceps.
Design & Configuration
The slender, rigid shaft provides access into the arterial lumen beyond the arteriotomy while preserving tactile feedback, allowing the surgeon to feel the intimal plane and modulate traction. Availability in straight and curved configurations accommodates linear segments and curved or bifurcating anatomy respectively; a curved tip assists in navigating around branch points without excessive manipulation of the vessel. The atraumatic rounded or spatulated stripping tip spreads and separates tissue rather than cutting, which helps preserve the integrity of the plaque specimen and minimizes damage to the vessel wall.
