Clinical Application
This instrument is intended for use in open endarterectomy procedures to assist in the controlled mobilization and removal of atherosclerotic plaque from arterial walls. It is used after arteriotomy to develop a plane between plaque and the medial layer and to strip the remaining intimal plaque along the vessel lumen. Typical applications include carotid and peripheral arterial endarterectomy where atraumatic, controlled separation of plaque is required to restore a smooth luminal surface and optimize blood flow.
Design & Configuration
The blunt, spatula-like geometry spreads contact forces over a broad surface to reduce focal trauma to the arterial media while engaging the plaque for controlled dissection. A low-profile, flat stripping tip facilitates insertion into the subintimal plane and allows the surgeon to follow the plaque seam along curved arterial segments. The shaft and grip area are configured to provide direct manual control and tactile feedback during gradual advancement and stripping maneuvers, helping to minimize intimal flaps and preserve vessel integrity.
