Design & Configuration
The two-pronged fork geometry concentrates vibratory energy in the tines while the stem transmits those vibrations to the clinician's hand and, when applied, to patient contact sites. The A1 440 frequency produces a clear, sustained tone that is easy to identify by ear for pitch-based tasks. The simple stem handle allows controlled placement on bony prominences (mastoid process for auditory testing; distal phalanges or bony prominences for vibration testing). Because different clinical tests favor different frequencies (for example, 128 Hz is commonly used for peripheral vibration testing and ~512 Hz for detailed hearing conduction testing), the 440 Hz instrument is particularly practical when a musical pitch reference or basic auditory screening is desired.
