Clinical Application
Designed for direct visualization of the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane, this Erhardt-style speculum provides a controlled, atraumatic access port for diagnostic otoscopy, microscopic inspection, and minor in-office procedures such as cerumen removal or foreign body retrieval. The 4.5 mm tip diameter is appropriate for standard adult external auditory canals where a moderate working aperture is required while maintaining a comfortable fit for the patient.
Design & Configuration
The conical (funnel) geometry directs the examiner's line of sight and any coaxial illumination toward the tympanic membrane while limiting contact with the canal walls. The Fig.1 Erhardt profile provides a balanced combination of aperture and insertion depth, facilitating use with a headlamp, operating microscope, or standard otoscope handle. Smooth, rounded edges reduce trauma to the canal during insertion and manipulation.
