Clinical Application
Designed for fine, atraumatic separation and elevation of the dura mater during neurosurgical procedures. The instrument provides controlled blunt dissection for reflecting dural flaps in craniotomy, subdural exposure, and selected spinal procedures where precise dural manipulation and protection of underlying neural tissue are required. Its tip geometry facilitates gentle sweeping and levering motions to minimize cortical contact and reduce risk of tearing.
Design & Configuration
The Fig.4 Penfield configuration combines a slender shaft with a broad, rounded spatula working surface to distribute contact pressure and reduce focal stress on the dura. The working tip profile permits both delicate sweeping and controlled elevation in confined operative corridors, while the overall length supports access to deeper fields without excessive hand intrusion. These characteristics improve tactile feedback and allow the surgeon to maintain plane control when dissecting dura from bone, arachnoid adhesions, or underlying cortex.
Instrument Specifications
- Pattern: Penfield, Fig.4
- Length: 21.5 cm
- Working tip: Broad, rounded spatula for atraumatic dural elevation
- Primary use: Cranial and spinal dural dissection and flap elevation
- Construction: Surgical-grade stainless steel, reusable
Material & Construction
Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel to withstand repeated use and sterilization. The broad, rounded tip is formed to provide a smooth, atraumatic contact surface for delicate tissue planes. Designed for long-term reprocessing and integration into neurosurgical instrument sets.
Quality & Compliance
Manufactured by FDA-registered OEM facilities and produced under strict quality control standards.
Brand Comparison
Comparable in form and function to equivalent instruments offered by major US medical suppliers.
