Clinical Application
Designed for controlled removal of small amounts of bone and ligament in spinal and cranial procedures, this up-biting Ferris-Smith Kerrison is used to decompress neural elements during laminectomy, laminotomy, foraminotomy and microdiscectomy. The 3 mm bite diameter enables precise, incremental resection of laminar edges, osteophytes and ligamentum flavum in confined operative corridors where delicate manipulation is required to protect dura and nerve roots.
Design & Configuration
The up-biting orientation provides an upward cutting vector that is useful when working from below a bony ledge or when accessing the inferior aspect of a lamina without excessive retraction. The 18 cm overall length offers reach into deeper posterior exposures while keeping the surgeon's hands clear of the field. A small 3 mm jaw allows for fine, controlled bites and incremental tissue removal, reducing the risk of large uncontrolled defects. The Ferris-Smith pattern is arranged to give direct tactile feedback at the tip, facilitating precise placement and controlled cutting in microsurgical and open spinal techniques.
