Clinical Application
This up-biting Kerrison punch is intended for precise biting and removal of small segments of bone and soft tissue in confined posterior spinal and cranial corridors. The 2 mm bite size supports fine, controlled work adjacent to the dura and nerve roots, making it suitable for lumbar and cervical laminectomy, foraminotomy, microdiscectomy, and other decompression procedures where incremental bone removal is required.
Design & Configuration
The Ferris Smith pattern provides a straight shaft with an up-oriented cutting tip, allowing the surgeon to approach tissue from a caudal-to-cephalad vector while maintaining line-of-sight over the working field. The up configuration facilitates removal of superior laminar edge and ligamentum flavum toward the operator, improving access in tight posterior spaces. The combination of a narrow 2 mm bite and a 18 cm overall length balances precision at the tip with reach into deeper operative corridors.
