Clinical Application
Hegar uterine dilators are manual dilators used to achieve controlled, gradual cervical dilation prior to intrauterine procedures. The 21.0 mm size is a large-diameter instrument intended for cases that require substantial dilation such as operative dilation and curettage, hysteroscopic access in select patients, management of retained products, or other gynecologic procedures performed under appropriate anesthesia. These dilators are used sequentially with smaller sizes to minimize tissue trauma and to verify cervical patency.
Design & Configuration
The Hegar design features a smooth, tapered cylindrical shaft that provides predictable radial expansion as the instrument is advanced through the cervical canal. A rounded/blunt tip reduces focal tissue pressure during insertion and withdrawal. The single-ended configuration simplifies handling when a specific size is required without exchanging double-ended instruments. Straight geometry allows direct alignment with the cervical canal for tactile feedback and controlled dilation.
