Clinical Application

Used to achieve controlled, atraumatic cervical dilation prior to intrauterine procedures. This instrument is appropriate for operating room and clinic settings when preparing the cervix for dilatation and curettage (D&C), hysteroscopy, intrauterine device placement or removal, and other gynecologic procedures that require predictable passage into the uterine cavity. The 12.5 mm diameter provides a moderate-to-large calibrated opening when a single-step or sequential dilation strategy is indicated.

The classic Hegar geometry features a smooth, slightly tapered cylindrical shaft terminating in a rounded, blunt tip to minimize the risk of cervical laceration. The single-ended configuration (S/E) provides a single calibrated working end with a stable grip along the shaft for tactile feedback during dilation. A polished surface reduces tissue drag and facilitates gradual insertion. The uniform diameter marking (12.5 mm) supports consistent dilation sizing when used alone or as part of a graduated serial set.
