Clinical Application
Volkmann-style curettes are used to remove and shape bone and to harvest cancellous material in a controlled manner. This instrument is appropriate for orthopedic procedures (small-bone work, joint preparation), otolaryngology and sinus surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, cranial procedures where precise scraping or cavity debridement is required, and procedures that demand a small, scooping action rather than the shearing action of rongeurs. The spoon-shaped tip collects and retains small fragments, allowing efficient removal from the operative site.
Design & Configuration
The Volkmann scoop geometry provides a rounded cutting edge and concave bowl that facilitates controlled scraping, scooping and removal of cancellous bone without excessive gouging. The Fig.2 working profile is one of the standard Volkmann sizes, offering a balance between bite capacity and access in confined surgical fields. The 17 cm overall length gives sufficient reach for deeper operative cavities while maintaining tactile feedback at the handle for delicate maneuvers.
