Clinical Application

Designed for controlled subperiosteal dissection of the ribs and costal cartilage, this periosteal elevator is used to elevate and reflect periosteum during thoracotomy, rib fracture fixation, chest wall reconstruction, and other thoracic or trauma procedures. The instrument facilitates creation of a plane between periosteum and underlying bone or cartilage, helping to expose the rib surface for plating, debridement, grafting, or hardware placement while minimizing direct trauma to adjacent soft tissues and pleura.

Design & Configuration

The instrument features a tapered, spatula-style periosteal blade on a long shaft, giving the surgeon reach and mechanical advantage when working along the curvature of the rib cage. The blade geometry allows controlled lifting and peeling of periosteum with a smooth, broad contact surface to reduce focal pressure on bone. The 22.5 cm overall length provides access into the thoracic field while maintaining tactile feedback and control for precise subperiosteal maneuvering.
