Clinical Application
Designed for controlled subperiosteal dissection of rib and costal cartilage, this periosteal elevator is used during thoracic procedures such as thoracotomy exposure, rib plating and fixation, costal cartilage harvest for reconstructive grafts, and procedures requiring elevation of periosteum from curved bony surfaces. The instrument enables precise mobilization of periosteal tissue while minimizing damage to underlying cortical bone.
Design & Configuration
The Semb costal configuration combines a thin, spatulated blade with a shaft length that permits access along the curvature of the rib cage. The blade geometry facilitates controlled levering and blunt/sharp dissection depending on technique, and the 20 cm length provides reach to posterior and lateral rib segments without excessive shaft bulk that could obstruct the operative field.
