Clinical Application
Macintosh curved blades are used to obtain a view of the glottic opening during direct laryngoscopy and facilitate endotracheal intubation in operating rooms, procedural suites, and emergency airway management. A three-blade set spanning #1, #2 (78 mm), and #3 provides size options for small pediatric to adult patients, allowing clinicians to select the blade that best fits patient anatomy to optimize visualization while minimizing soft-tissue trauma.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curvature is designed to be positioned in the vallecula to indirectly lift the epiglottis and expose the vocal cords. Having a set of consecutive sizes enables correct blade-to-patient proportionality: smaller blades reduce excessive tongue displacement in pediatric patients, while larger blades improve the line of sight in adults. Integrated fiber optic illumination provides consistent, shadow-reduced lighting along the blade length, improving visualization in difficult airways compared with single-point bulb illumination.
Instrument Specifications
- Type: Macintosh laryngoscope blades, set of 3
- Sizes included: #1, #2 (78 mm), #3
- Blade geometry: Curved Macintosh pattern for vallecular positioning
- Illumination: Integrated fiber optic light transmission
- Intended use: Direct laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation
