Clinical Application

Piper obstetrical forceps are a specialist delivery instrument used primarily to assist extraction of the aftercoming fetal head in breech presentations and to provide controlled traction of the fetal head when indicated during assisted vaginal delivery. Their configuration is intended for use by trained obstetricians in the delivery suite or operating room when manual delivery is not possible or when controlled, axial traction is required to expedite delivery while protecting maternal soft tissues.

Design & Configuration

The long 44 cm shanks place the blades and locking mechanism well away from the maternal perineum, allowing the operator to reach and engage the fetal head even when the body has already been delivered. The cephalic curvature of the blades conforms to the fetal head contour to provide a secure seat and distribute compressive force across the head rather than concentrating stress at a single point. Interlocking handles permit controlled approximation of the blades and stable traction; the extended length also facilitates finer control of traction vectors and minimal maternal soft-tissue interference during extraction.

Instrument Specifications

  • Pattern: Piper obstetrical forceps
  • Overall length: 44 cm
  • Blade geometry: cephalic curvature designed to cradle the fetal head
  • Handle: interlocking/locking design for stable blade alignment
  • Typical use: assisted vaginal delivery, aftercoming head in breech
  • Reusable: designed for repeated sterilization and clinical use

Material & Construction

Constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel for corrosion resistance and durability under repeated sterilization cycles. The instrument is manufactured and finished to provide smooth contact surfaces where it engages fetal tissue and maternal soft tissues, and to allow for routine cleaning and inspection between uses.

Quality & Compliance

Manufactured by FDA-registered OEM facilities and produced under strict quality control standards.

Brand Comparison

Comparable in form and function to equivalent instruments offered by major US medical suppliers.
