Clinical Application

This Olivecrona convex brain spatula is intended for controlled retraction and protection of cerebral cortex and superficial subcortical structures during cranial procedures. It is used to create and maintain a shallow working corridor, gently displace brain tissue away from the operative field, and protect cortical surfaces during tumor resection, hematoma evacuation, aneurysm exposure, and other open neurosurgical approaches. The convex blade geometry helps distribute pressure across the cortical surface to reduce focal stress.

Design & Configuration

The convex blade profile conforms to the natural curvature of the cerebral hemisphere, allowing atraumatic contact with cortical tissue while maintaining a stable retraction plane. The 18 x 22 mm working surface provides a compact footprint for focal retraction without excessive coverage of adjacent cortex. An overall length of 18 cm provides sufficient reach for most cranial cavities while allowing intuitive handling and fine positional control at the operative site. Smooth, rounded edges and a polished finish minimize friction and reduce the risk of cortical injury during placement and repositioning.

Instrument Specifications

  • Pattern / model: Olivecrona convex brain spatula
  • Blade working surface: 18 x 22 mm (convex)
  • Overall length: 18 cm
  • Primary use: Cortical and superficial subcortical retraction and protection
  • Material: Stainless steel construction
  • Reusable: Designed for repeated sterilization

Material & Construction

Constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with a polished finish to resist corrosion and facilitate cleaning. The blade edges are rounded and finished to reduce tissue adherence and shear during retraction. No illumination or fiber optic components are incorporated.
