Clinical Application
This curved Macintosh blade is used for direct laryngoscopy to obtain a view of the glottic opening and facilitate orotracheal intubation. The Macintosh geometry is intended to be positioned in the vallecula to indirectly lift the epiglottis, improving visualization of the vocal cords during routine and difficult airway management. Size #2 (90 mm) is commonly selected for pediatric patients and small adults, and is appropriate for use in operating rooms, emergency departments, intensive care units, and procedural suites.
Design & Configuration
The conventional curved blade profile provides a broad flange for soft-tissue retraction and creates the curvature needed to follow the oropharyngeal axis when performing a standard Macintosh technique. The 90 mm length of this size #2 blade is balanced to reach the vallecula without excessive distal projection in smaller airways. Integrated bulb illumination located near the blade tip directs light into the oropharynx for improved visualization. The conventional (non-fiber optic) bulb system is simple to service and replace, and the blade is designed to mate with a compatible reusable laryngoscope handle for power and manipulation.
