Clinical Application
This tongue plate is designed to provide atraumatic retraction and shielding of the tongue to optimize exposure of the oropharynx and hypopharynx. It is used to stabilize and depress the tongue during procedures such as tonsillectomy, base-of-tongue surgery, pharyngeal biopsies and other ENT or head & neck interventions where consistent, hands‑free exposure is required. The plate's dimensions support targeted retraction without excessive encroachment on adjacent soft tissues.
Design & Configuration
The flat, contoured geometry distributes pressure evenly across the dorsal surface of the tongue to reduce focal stress and minimize mucosal trauma. The 22 x 70 mm footprint provides modest surface area for retraction while maintaining access to the tonsillar pillars and oropharyngeal inlet. A precision attachment interface allows secure fixation to a McIvor-style retractor frame so the surgical field remains stable and hands-free for the operating team. Smooth, rounded edges facilitate atraumatic placement and repositioning during the case.
