Clinical Application

Used as a percutaneous anchoring element for external fixation and skeletal traction, this Schanz-style bone screw provides stable purchase in diaphyseal cortical bone for temporary fracture stabilization, provisional fixation during open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), and for modular external fixator constructs. The flat tip is selected when a broader cortical contact is desirable for load distribution and predictable seating against the outer cortex.

The head geometry is configured to accept standard Schanz drivers or chucks, allowing reliable transfer of torque during insertion and removal. The flat tip geometry creates a wider contact surface at the bone interface compared with tapered trocar tips; clinically this can reduce point-load concentration on cortical bone and support stable bone–pin interface in applications where toggling or cut-through is a concern.
