Clinical Application
Designed for controlled mechanical dilation of the cervical canal, this Hegar dilator facilitates atraumatic enlargement of the cervical os to permit introduction of instruments or scopes. Common uses include dilation prior to uterine instrumentation such as dilation and curettage, hysteroscopy, biopsy, and other gynecologic procedures where graduated cervical expansion is required. Its small 3.0 mm diameter is useful for initial or gentle dilation in patients with minimal cervical opening or when progressive dilation from smaller sizes is indicated.
Design & Configuration
The single-ended, straight tapered geometry provides a uniform, cylindrical increase in diameter along the shaft, allowing gradual dilation with minimal focal stress on cervical tissue. A smooth, rounded tip reduces the risk of snagging or perforation during insertion. The single-ended configuration offers a simple, easy-to-control instrument for manual tactile feedback during advancement; it is commonly used in sequence with larger Hegar sizes to achieve the desired dilation gradually.
