Clinical Application
Guyon urethral bougies in 20 Fr are indicated for atraumatic calibration and progressive dilation of the urethra, negotiation of urethral strictures, and as a guide for placement of catheters or endoscopic instruments. The 20 Fr size is commonly used in adult urologic procedures when a larger-caliber lumen is required for catheter passage or instrument access. In clinical practice these bougies are used sequentially with smaller sizes when dilating tight strictures to reduce mucosal trauma.
Design & Configuration
The Guyon pattern features a single, firm shaft with a smooth, tapered, rounded tip designed to pass through the urethral meatus and negotiate strictured segments with minimal catch. The straight-to-gently-curved geometry and shaft stiffness provide tactile feedback to the operator, allowing controlled advancement and rotation. A polished surface reduces friction and facilitates lubrication, improving ease of insertion and reducing risk of urethral injury when used with appropriate technique.
