Clinical Application
Foerster sponge-holding forceps are used to securely grasp and control radiopaque or non‑radiopaque sponges and swabs during procedures that require blunt manipulation, packing, or atraumatic retraction. The curved configuration enables reaching into cavities and around structures with improved visibility while maintaining a controlled grip on dressings, packing material or tissue for debridement, hemostatic sponge placement, and specimen retrieval in general surgery, gynecology, ENT and minor procedure settings.
Design & Configuration
The curved shaft provides an angled approach that improves line-of-sight and access to deep or confined operative fields. The Foerster pattern features oval, fenestrated jaws with serrated edges designed to hold soft materials and sponges securely without penetrating them, reducing slippage during placement or removal. The instrument’s locking box‑lock/ratchet design (standard to the Foerster pattern) permits hands‑free retention of the grasped material once positioned.
