Clinical Application
This up-biting Kerrison punch is designed for controlled removal of small segments of cortical bone and ligamentous tissue during spinal and neurosurgical decompression procedures such as laminotomy, laminectomy and foraminotomy. The 5x5 mm bite permits precise, incremental resection in confined operative corridors, aiding decompression of neural elements while minimizing collateral bone loss.
Design & Configuration
The up-biting (cranially oriented) jaw geometry directs the cutting action toward the superior aspect of the instrument shaft, which is advantageous when working on the undersurface of a lamina or in narrow posterior approaches. The 18 cm overall length provides a balance between reach to deeper targets and tactile control at the working tip. A compact 5x5 mm bite allows surgeons to remove small chips of bone with repeatable, reproducible motions for fine decompression and contouring.
