Clinical Application
This up-biting Kerrison punch is intended for controlled removal of small segments of bone and ligament in confined spinal and cranial exposures. The 2 mm bite size enables incremental nibbling during laminotomy, laminectomy, foraminal decompression, microdiscectomy, and targeted intracranial bone work where preservation of adjacent neural elements is critical. The up orientation facilitates undercutting the posterior elements without requiring instrument inversion in narrow posterior corridors.
Design & Configuration
The up-biting geometry directs the cutting action away from the surgeon and toward the operative field, improving sightlines and enabling undercut removal beneath intact structures. At 18 cm overall length the instrument provides reach for deep posterior approaches while maintaining tactile control at the distal bite. The small 2 mm tip permits precise, staged resection and reduces the risk of excessive bone removal compared with larger-bite rongeurs.
