Clinical Application
Designed to provide controlled separation of the ribs for access to the thoracic cavity. Ideal for posterolateral and anterolateral thoracotomy approaches, lung resections, pleural procedures and other cardiothoracic operations where stable, hands‑free rib retraction is required. The paired 35 mm and 50 mm blades allow selection of an appropriate blade profile for different intercostal spaces and patient anatomy.
Design & Configuration
The Cooley pattern features a rack-and-pawl self-retaining mechanism that permits incremental opening and secure locking at any desired spread. Paired blades of differing widths enable graduated, asymmetric spreading to accommodate variable rib spacing and to minimize focal pressure on the ribs. The 200 mm working length balances reach and control for typical adult thoracic exposures while remaining maneuverable at the operative field.
