Clinical Application
This dilator is intended for use in open cardiac procedures to dilate the mitral orifice and facilitate commissurotomy or valvotomy in cases of mitral stenosis. It is also used intraoperatively to assess effective mitral orifice size during repair or reconstruction, providing the surgeon with a controlled method to enlarge and evaluate the valve opening while minimizing leaflet and subvalvular trauma.
Design & Configuration
The instrument's graduated 7–30 mm range enables incremental, controlled dilation across a clinically useful span of mitral orifice diameters. An atraumatic, rounded dilating tip distributes contact forces across the leaflet tissue to reduce focal trauma to leaflets and chordae. The tapered geometry and stepwise sizing allow the operator to advance to the next diameter with tactile feedback, supporting precise intraoperative decision-making during commissural release or reconstruction.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Mitral valve dilator
- Pattern / model: Cooley-DeBakey
- Configuration: Graduated dilator range, 7–30 mm
- Tip pattern: Atraumatic rounded dilating tip for progressive enlargement
- Typical surgical use: Open mitral valvotomy/commissurotomy and intraoperative sizing/assessment
