Clinical Application

The Cobb-type spinal elevator is a general-purpose instrument used to create and maintain subperiosteal planes during spinal exposure. Its broad spatulated tip is used to elevate periosteum, retract paraspinal musculature, and assist in mobilizing soft tissues from the posterior elements of the spine. Common procedural applications include posterior lumbar and thoracic decompression, laminectomy exposure, pedicle and facet preparation during fusion procedures, and general soft-tissue elevation in open spinal approaches.

Design & Configuration

The broad 25 mm spatulated blade provides a flat, stable contact surface that allows controlled lifting of periosteum and soft tissue with reduced risk of focal tissue puncture. The 28 cm overall length gives the surgeon extended reach into deep operative fields while keeping hands clear of the wound margin. The Cobb pattern balances surface area and shaft length to provide tactile feedback for blunt subperiosteal dissection and mechanical leverage when elevating adherent tissues.
