Clinical Application
Provides central midline retraction and elevation of the wound during open abdominal procedures. The center blade delivers direct, focused exposure of the surgical field and is used in combination with lateral blades and the Balfour self-retaining frame to maintain consistent, hands-free retraction. Common applications include exploratory laparotomy, bowel surgery, gynecologic procedures, cesarean delivery, and trauma cases where sustained central retraction is required.
Design & Configuration
The center blade's rectangular footprint (68 x 85 mm) determines the surface area contacting tissues and the amount of central elevation produced. As a blade-only component, it is intended to mount to a compatible Balfour-style retractor frame and works together with lateral blades to generate a circumferential opening. Purchasing the center blade separately allows replacement of worn or damaged components without replacing the entire retractor assembly, supporting inventory flexibility and cost-effective maintenance.
