Clinical Application
Provides stable, self-retaining exposure of the abdominal cavity in pediatric and neonatal patients. The smaller 90 mm configuration is intended for limited incisions and small abdominal walls encountered in pediatric general surgery, urology and pediatric gynecologic procedures. By maintaining consistent retraction without continuous manual effort, it improves visualization of the operative field for tissue handling, suturing and organ inspection while minimizing intermittent pressure changes associated with handheld retractors.
Design & Configuration
The instrument uses a low-profile ratcheting frame with adjustable lateral blades and a central blade to deliver even, atraumatic retraction across the wound margin. The baby Balfour geometry distributes force over wider blade surfaces to reduce focal pressure on delicate pediatric tissues. The self-retaining ratchet frees assistants for other tasks and permits incremental adjustment of exposure depth during the case. The compact 90 mm form factor allows use through shorter incisions and in small cavities where standard adult retractors would be excessive.
Instrument Specifications
- Type: Self-retaining abdominal retractor (Balfour pattern)
- Model: Baby (pediatric) configuration
- Configuration: Adjustable lateral blades with central blade and ratcheting crossbar
- Size: 90 mm (designed for pediatric use)
- Typical use: Pediatric laparotomy, hernia repair, gastrostomy, small-cavity abdominal procedures
