Clinical Application
This curved Macintosh blade with integrated fiber-optic illumination is intended for direct laryngoscopy to optimize visualization of the glottic opening during endotracheal intubation. Size #2 (86 mm) is commonly selected for pediatric patients and smaller adults where a shorter blade length improves control and reduces risk of posterior pharyngeal contact. The integrated illumination channel improves line-of-sight in deep or small airways and supports rapid, controlled tube placement in elective and emergency airway management.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curvature is designed to sit in the vallecula and indirectly elevate the epiglottis when the blade is lifted, creating a view of the vocal cords while minimizing direct contact with the epiglottis. The blade flange helps displace the tongue and create a working channel for passing an endotracheal tube. Internal fiber-optic illumination provides even, shadow-reducing light along the blade edge, improving visualization compared with distal-only bulb illumination and reducing the need for adjunct light sources during intubation.
