Clinical Application
A self-retaining retractor designed to provide broad, stable exposure of the vaginal canal and paravaginal tissues during gynecologic and pelvic procedures. It is commonly used to maintain atraumatic retraction and optimize visualization during vaginal hysterectomy, anterior/posterior repair (colporrhaphy), pelvic floor reconstruction, perineal procedures, and other transvaginal interventions. By securing lateral and superior displacement of vaginal walls, the instrument frees assistants' hands and facilitates precise tissue handling, suture placement, and intraoperative assessment.
Design & Configuration
The retractor employs an adjustable lateral frame that holds paired blades in a self-retaining position. Fenestrated blade faces distribute retraction forces across a wider surface to reduce focal pressure on mucosa and allow fluid egress. The frame's adjustable ratchet-style hold permits incremental expansion to match patient anatomy and procedural exposure needs. Removable blade elements allow configuration for left, right or central retraction and simplify cleaning and sterilization.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Self-retaining vaginal retractor
- Pattern / model: O'Sullivan–O'Connor
- Configuration: Adjustable lateral frame with removable blades
- Tip / jaw pattern: Fenestrated blades for broad, atraumatic retraction
